Transport and Road Safety

This has been my abiding passion since 1996, when I was transformed from someone who never wore a seat belt, to a compliant driver who understands the risk associated with road travel, and is regarded in the industry as a road safety fanatic.

Current and recent work in this field includes the following:

• Working as a consultant with the Department of Transport in a function which coordinates road safety functions, encourages multi-sectoral input into the project, and uses media to promote safety, as well as providing technical and strategic support for departmental initiatives.

• Preparing training materials and undertaking training for Community Road Safety Councils in nearly 300 local authorities, to enable them to understand the challenges and solutions to safety and ensure that they become enthusiastic ambassadors in their own communities.

• Writing eight modules on transport legislation and regulation in Namibia for the Namibian Polytechnic which is part of a new degree course on Traffic and Transport Management which is being offered by this tertiary institution.

• Consultation, development and writing of the Safely Home strategy and business plan for the Western Cape Department of Works and Transport, with the brief to ensure the plans were coordinated with the Provincial

Strategic Planning

We plan all our lives, and hopefully we plan strategically with the goal and vision clearly in sight. 

One of the challenges in South Africa is that we have legislation, regulation, policies and strategies which are amongst the best in the world, but the real challenge is in implementation.  All the paper-planning in the world does not get things done, but  clever strategic planning, together with a proper action plan for implementation works.

Diversity Training

I had thought of diversity as dealing with race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and those obvious issues. What I have discovered is that it goes much further than this, and the less evident issues of personality type, working habits and management styles impact on every single one of us. Undergoing an exercise in diversity training makes us more effective, makes our working life more enjoyable and productive and gives considerable personal satisfaction.
